Dans une atmosphère recueillie, deux cent mille pèlerins, en grande majorité des jeunes, ont pris part samedi soir à une veillée à la mémoire de Jean Paul II au Cirque Maxime de Rome à la veille de la cérémonie qui le fera bienheureux dimanche.

  A la fin de la veillée débute une nuit blanche de prières.


Un itinéraire de huit églises est proposé à travers la capitale italienne pour permettre à ceux qui le souhaitent de prier toute la nuit.

Autour du Vatican, et notamment au pied du château Saint-Ange, au bord du Tibre, des centaines de pèlerins s'apprêtent à passer la nuit à la belle étoile dans leur sac de couchage pour avoir une place aux premières loges pour la cérémonie.


Les fidèles catholiques français sont environ 40 000 à Rome, dont beaucoup de groupes de jeunes venus souvent des écoles privées ou appartenant à des mouvements religieux ou à des compagnies scoutes.

Des centaines de milliers de pèlerins commencent à affluer vers la place, dans une cohue bon enfant.

La messe de béatification de Jean Paul II doit se tenir à 10 heures.

Aux entrées de la Via de la Conziliazione, grande artère qui mène à la place devant la basilique, les gens attendaient de pouvoir avancer, serrés les uns contre les autres.

Beaucoup de Polonais, avec des drapeaux, sont aux côtés de chrétiens d'une centaine de pays, mais en grande majorité européens.

86 délégations du monde entier et de 300 000 à 500 000 pèlerins sont présents pour honorer un pape qui, tout au long de son règne (1978-2005) ponctué de 104 voyages, a modernisé l'image de l'Eglise.

Le cercueil de Jean Paul II, sorti vendredi des Grottes vaticanes, a été installé dimanche matin au coeur de la basilique, devant l'autel principal.

Pour permettre la béatification, un miracle a été reconnu: celui d'une religieuse française, Marie Simon-Pierre, guérie de la maladie de Parkinson.

La religieuse s'est exprimée devant les fidèles au Cirque Maxime à Rome samedi soir.

Au cours de cette cérémonie de béatification, prévue pour durer deux heures et demie, le pape Jean Paul II doit être déclaré "bienheureux" à l'issue d'un processus accéléré lancé peu après son décès en 2005.

La place Saint-Pierre est déjà toute occupée, bien avant le début de la cérémonie : elle est divisée entre un espace de places assises, et un autre où les gens suivront debout la messe de deux heures et demie.

La messe est concélébrée par 800 prêtres qui donneront la communion à la foule de pèlerins, massés pour certains depuis samedi soir tout autour de la basilique.

 

Pour ceux qui ne peuvent pas suivre la cérémonie place Saint-Pierre, quatorze écrans géants ont été placés à Rome, retransmettant les images diffusées par les télévisions du monde entier.

Environ 90 délégations officielles du monde entier assisteront à la cérémonie de béatification, dont 16 chefs d'Etat parmi lesquels le président zimbabwéen Robert Mugabe.

 

Sanctionné pour des violations des droits de l'homme dans son pays, ce dernier est interdit de déplacement dans l'Union européenne, à laquelle n'appartient pas le Vatican.

Il a été sorti vendredi des cryptes du Vatican.

A l'issue de la messe de béatification, le cercueil du nouveau "bienheureux" restera exposé le temps que tous les visiteurs puissent s'incliner.

Benoît XVI débute sa prédication évoquant l'histoire de l'apôtre Pierre et l'importance de la béatification, élément de "béatitude" dans la vie chrétienne.

A noter que la chancelière allemande Angela Merkel n'est pas venue au Vatican, et a été représentée par son ministre de l'Intérieur Hans-Peter Friedrich.


Sa présence avait pourtant été annoncée dimanche matin par une agence de presse italienne.

Le cardinal espagnol Agustín García Gasco Vicente, ancien archevêque de Valence, est décédé dimanche d'un infarctus peu avant la béatification du pape Jean Paul II à laquelle il était venu assister, ont annoncé des sources vaticanes à l'agence I.media.

Agustín García-Gasco y Vicente, né le 12 février 1931 à Corral de Almaguer près de Tolède et mort le 1er mai 2011 à Rome, est un cardinal espagnol, archevêque de Valence en Espagne de 1992 à 2009.
